Traditional Vs Western Weddings

Traditional, Western or getting married the biblical way.

When does one concider yourself married. In our African culture we actualy get married twice even more than that. It is very interesting to know that when you are a born again christian you are not married untll you stand before witnesses and are blessed by a man of God. But because of one being an african we also don't dispute the fact of Lobola and we also need to have the white dress ceremony. I think african people spen more money on getting married and I truly can't get to the bottom of understanding this whole process.

When I got married, we first had the engagment just before my future husband took a letter to my parent. Then he needs to send a letter to my parent to notify them that his family would like to visit and present his request of wanting to marry. Then a date is set for the discussion and when his family comes for the discussion they may be able to pay Lobola on the same day or they might have to come back and finish off. Once they have paid Lobola then another date is set for the tranditional wedding. On the day of the traditional wedding everyone gets dressed up and we present gifts to each other as families and that symbolises the begining of a relationship between the two families but still at that time we are still not officialy married. Another date is then set for the big celebration and the officiating of the marriage and then only on that will you now be husband and wife. I tell you friends, it is a long jorney and don't understand why people would want to divorce after such a long process.
I would like to hear your views on this one!
